Sample America's mission is to unite the students of America in a real search to discover cures for infectious disease through engaging classroom experiments. The Sample America project is a classroom experiment for middle school and high school students that invites students to take part in a much larger, very real search for new antibiotics. Each group of students will take a soil sample from their community and through an educational experiment produce a resistance profile- a number. This number will allow us to prioritize all of these samples from across the country in terms of their probability of containing rare bacteria that may produce a new antibiotic. The rest of that sample, once mailed back to Sample America United, will be used in an ongoing drug discovery pipeline to find a new cure for infectious diseases. With the emergence of multi-drug resistant strains of pathogenic bacteria, these new cures are desperately needed. Sample America United aims to be a catalyst of discovery in this important mission while igniting a spark of scientific curiosity in the youth of America.
